Frequently Asked Questions
We have provided a quick guide to some of the most frequently asked questions regarding SVQ childcare training. Please feel free to call us to discuss any concerns you may have.
How will I pay for my course?
Course Costs / Funding Q. Train receive funding to pay for your training from Skills Development Scotland (SDS) for 16-19 year olds and Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for 20 year olds plus. Please contact Q. Train Limited for further information on grant funding and course start dates, and availability. How long does the course take to complete?
SVQ’s are individually tailored and 12 – 18 months is a guideline for completion.
What about on-going support?
At Q. Train you are allocated a dedicated assessor from start to successful completion. If at any point you require additional support then your assessor is available to give you that extra one to one you might need
What age do I need to be to apply?
Anyone from aged 16 years plus can apply. At Q. Train we value life-long learning for all ages, so we do not put restrictions on the age of applicants.
Entry requirements?
At Q. Train we accept candidates based on their experience with children and their enthusiasm to learn. 16-19 year olds will be given support to seek employment as a modern apprenticeship if they do not have employment already.
Applicants 20 years plus must however be in a voluntary or employment basis within a childcare setting, as the qualification is a work based qualification and observation assessment working with children is mandatory. A small essay is part of our application process to assess your training needs.
What checks are made for those working with children?
Childcare has a strict vetting process and this consists of:-
Two references.
A PVG (Protecting Vulnerable Groups).
The childcare setting (employer) will be responsible for carrying out the vetting procedure with you and once this has been carried out, a final start date will be confirmed.
How do I apply?
16 – 19 year olds – Modern Apprenticeships SVQs

When we receive your forms you will be invited for an information session interview date at our Edinburgh or Glasgow office. Successful applicants will be informed. A placement or employment opportunity will be organised if necessary, as you must be working with children to complete the qualification. A date for your induction session to start the qualification will be arranged.
20 year olds plus – Open Assessment SVQs

SAAS Grant Application: Along with your application form you also need to download and complete a SAAS grant application form and get your employer to complete the SAAS certification of income form or provide three copies of your latest payslips. If you are not employed then complete a SAAS self-employed form.
20 year olds plus must be employed or find a voluntary placement themselves to be eligible for application. Please contact us for support to complete the grant form.

What is expected of me during my SVQ?
As well as a commitment to studying and working towards achievement of your SVQ, a passion for working with children and young people is paramount.
Childcare work is very rewarding and requires a range of personal qualities such as an enthusiasm for working with children. You will need the ability to deal calmly with children’s behaviour and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

How much time do I need to spend studying?
We recommend that you should set aside an average of three hours per week for the SVQ course work, to enable you to keep up a steady of progress throughout the qualification.
